5th Degree Black Belt
Starting on the East coast of New England, I started studying the art of Shaolin Ch'uan Fa (Kempo Karate) as a child in 1985. Almost five years later, in December 1989, I was promoted to 1st Degree Black Belt. It was then I knew that Martial Arts was more than just a hobby. It became a desire to experience Kempo to the fullest and to gain a deeper understanding of the techniques. I knew that I wanted to teach the Kempo System to others. About a year and a half later, I receive my 2nd Degree Black Belt.
In December 1990, I joined the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged after serving four years. Once I was discharged from the Marine Corps, I resumed my full time studies of Kempo. In January 1995 I had the opportunity to become a full-time Instructor with USSD, under Professor Charles Mattera 10th Degree. In 1996, I was promoted to 3rd Degree Black Belt. During a trip to the Shaolin Temple in China with USSD, I tested and achieved the rank of 4th Degree Black Belt in July 2001. In October of 2009, I was promoted to the honorable rank of "Master", 5th Degree Black Belt. In addition to martial arts training, I am fluent in American Sign Language. (ASL)

Michelle Terrell has been training at United Studios of Self Defense Oceanside for over 6 years. She is a first degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo.

Shawn Gardner started at USSD Oceanside at the age of 8. He is now 19 and in college. Shawn has been assisting in private lessons and group classes for several years. Shawn is a well-respected young adult in the dojo and in life.
Sensei Eric started his training at USSD Oceanside 2008. Sensei Eric assists with the kids, youth and adult classes also teaches private lessons to several children and adults each week. His current rank is Brown Belt 2nd degree.
